If you’re living in Northern Virginia, there’s a good chance you don’t realize the many celebrities that live in your midst. From former pro sports stars to actors to politicians, many famous people have chosen the northern Virginia area as their home. Here’s a list of some of the most recognizable stars in the area:
1. Colin Powell, Former Secretary of State
Powell, who served as Secretary of State from 2001 to 2005 under President Bush, and also served in the military as a four-star army general. The first African-American to serve as Secretary of State, Powell currently lives in McLean, Virginia.
2. Jason Sudeikis, Actor
While he and his partner Olivia Wilde now live in Brooklyn, Sudeikis was born in Fairfax, Virginia. Best known for his leading roles in dozens of Hollywood films, most recently the comedy We’re the Millers, Sudeikis is one of the most famous actors from Northern Virginia.
3. Ted Leonsis, Owner of the Washington Capitals
Being fairly close to the D.C. area, it’s no surprise that the owner of the NHL team the Washington Capitals decided to live in northern Virginia. With many Capitals fans in the area, Leonsis is a local celebrity as much as a national one. Currently, he resides in McLean, Virginia.
4. Dave Grohl, Foo Fighters Frontman
While he only resides there part-time, Foo Fighters’ lead singer and guitarist Dave Grohl still owns the North Springfield house that he grew up in. Known for his drum work with punk legends Nirvana before becoming the frontman for the Foo Fighters, Grohl can be sighted in the Springfield from time to time.
5. Clinton Portis, former NFL Running Back
Portis, who spent the majority of his career with the Washington Redskins, is another sports star who stayed close to the location of their team. As one of the better running backs in team history, Portis is recognized by avid Redskins fans in the area, and he currently lives in McLean.
6. Newt Gingrich
Another politician residing in Northern Virginia, Gingrich is best known as the former Speaker of the House. In recent years, he has published books and served as a conservative political commentator, gaining recent attention as a supporter of President Trump. Like many of the celebrities on this list, Gingrich lives in McLean.
7. Gilbert Arenas, NBA Point Guard
Arenas, who was nicknamed “Agent Zero” for his number zero jersey number and clutch shot-making ability, was a three-time NBA All Star who played for the Golden State Warriors, Washington Wizards, Memphis Grizzlies and Orlando Magic. He spent his best years with the Wizards, where he became a fan-favorite and was known as the top shooter on the team. Currently, Arenas lives in Great Falls, Virginia.
